New employee figures for 2017 show an increase over 2016

Employment estimates were released by ONS on 27 September 2018. The number of employees working in Kirklees increased in 2017 to 155,100 from 153,800 in 2016. However, this is still lower than the peak year of 2004 (160,000). Kirklees has one of the highest percentage of people in the Leeds City Region (LCR) working in manufacturing, with 16.4% of employees compared to 8.1% in England and 10.3% LCR. Selby is highest at 17.8% (lowest York 4.2%). Manufacturing jobs in Kirklees increased from 21,500 in 2016 to 25,500 in 2017, with Dewsbury East ward employees increasing by 50% over the same period.
