Kirklees unemployment increases by +355 to 18,740 (6.9%)

Unemployment figures (Claimant Count, Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)) for July 2020 were released on Tuesday 11 August 2020 by the Department of Works and Pensions, and are now available in profiles, tables and maps. Figures shown use the headline 'Claimant Count' indicator introduced in October 2015, which counts the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance plus those who claim Universal Credit who are out of work.


The unemployment total for Kirklees in July 2020 was 18,740 or 6.9% of 16-64 year old population (England 6.5%). This represents an increase of +355 on the previous month, and an increase of +9,215 claimants on the same time last year; the lowest number of claimants in recent years was in December 2016 (5,380). The last time that unemployment was numerically this high was in April 1987 (18,950), though in January 1986 it reached 20,855. In the Leeds City Region York has the lowest unemployment (3.6%), with Bradford the highest (9.3%). The ward with the highest unemployment rate is Dewsbury West (10.5%), with Kirkburton the lowest at 3.3%.

Youth unemployment (18-24) stood at 3,975 or 10.8% of the population aged 18-24 (England 9.5%), +105 higher than last month and +2,040 higher than the same time last year.
