New employee figures for 2019 show 2,000 fewer manufacturing jobs but an overall increase of 3,100

Employment estimates were released by ONS on 6 November 2020. The number of employees working in Kirklees increased by 3,100 between 2018 and 2019 from 154,350 to 157,450, though this is lower than the peak year of 2004 (160,000). Kirklees has the second highest percentage of people in the Leeds City Region (LCR) working in manufacturing (highest Selby 19.2%, lowest York 4.6%), with 15.9% of employees compared to 8.0% in England and 10.0% LCR. Manufacturing jobs in Kirklees decreased from 27,000 in 2018 to 25,000 in 2019, with Dewsbury West ward having the highest percentage of manufacturing employees at 34%.
