Kirklees unemployment decreases by 130 in March 2021

Unemployment figures (Claimant Count, Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)) for March 2021 were released on Tuesday 20 April 2021 by the Department of Works and Pensions, and are now available in profiles, tables, and maps. Figures shown use the headline 'Claimant Count' indicator introduced in October 2015, which counts the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance plus those who claim Universal Credit who are out of work.

The unemployment total for Kirklees in March 2021 was 18,660 or 6.9% of people aged 16 to 64 (England 6.6%). This is a decrease of +130 on the previous month, and an increase of +8,385 claimants on the same time last year; the lowest number of claimants in recent years was in December 2016 (5,380). The last time that unemployment was numerically this high was May 1987 (18,305), though in September 1986 it reached 20,875. In the Leeds City Region Craven has the lowest unemployment (3.4%), with Bradford the highest (9.8%). The ward with the highest unemployment rate is Dewsbury West (10.7%), with Kirkburton the lowest at 2.9%.

Youth unemployment (18-24) stood at 3,785 or 10.3% of the population aged 18-24 (England 9.2%), -30 lower than last month and +1,720 higher than the same time last year.
